Director of CoMadres visits the east coast

Here's a story from the Journal of International Affairs at The New School, about Patty, the director of CoMadres, who visited New York, Boston, and Washington DC last month. Patricia Garcia, director of CoMadres, talks about the work of the committee and her experiences during the civil war.

I just stumbled across this via a little google search for Oscar Romero (it's his birthday!) and I'm so glad I did. I had the privilege of meeting Patty in June during my visit to El Salvador and I'm pretty sure I left my heart right there on the floor of the Co-Madres office. I look forward to learning more of their story through this blog.

We're Ruby and Inez. We're Quakers and we're following a leading to help an incredible group of women write their history. The Comité de Madres (Committee of Mothers), or Co-Madres, is one of the first human rights organizations in El Salvador.

Co-Madres was initiated by a group of women in the 1970s in response to extreme political repression and violence. They have struggled continuously for human rights for all in El Salvador and internationally.

Ruby visited their office in 2005 to learn about their work. When they suggested that perhaps one day someone would help them write their history, we decided to be that someone -- despite having no experience or formal training. This blog chronicles the joys and tribulations of that effort.
